Mobile Version of Balatro Receives Criticism Over New Sell Mechanic

The critically acclaimed indie roguelike, Balatro, recently launched its mobile versions on September 26, allowing fans to enjoy the poker-themed deck builder on the go. Despite the overwhelmingly positive reception—reflected in the perfect five-star rating on the Apple App Store from nearly 7,000 reviews—some players have criticized the changes to the sell mechanic in the Android and iOS ports.

In the mobile versions, the process of selling Joker cards differs significantly from the system on PC and consoles. This alteration has sparked concerns among the community. A recent post by user docpagliacci on the Balatro subreddit pointed out that players could accidentally sell their Joker cards due to the new drag-and-drop mechanic, which requires moving the Jokers to a sell zone placed next to the cards. This is a notable change from the original version, where players could sell Jokers through an additional click or button press, minimizing the risk of accidental sales. Docpagliacci suggested relocating the sell area to the far right side of the screen after accidentally selling a Joker while attempting to rearrange cards.

Many members of the Balatro community agreed with this feedback, with some expressing confusion over why the mobile version deviated from the established sell mechanic. In response, Balatro's solo developer, LocalThunk, quickly addressed the issue by gradually moving the sell zone further to the right in patches 1.1.1 to 1.1.4.

Despite this minor controversy, Balatro's mobile versions have enjoyed remarkable success, becoming the best-selling game on both Android and iOS shortly after release. It even managed to outperform popular titles like Minecraft in key markets such as Australia, Canada, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom.
