Director of Astro Bot Explains Absence of Square Enix Cameos in the Platformer

The director of Astro Bot, Nicolas Doucet, recently shed light on the notable lack of a Square Enix cameo in the 3D platformer. Despite featuring over 150 VIP bots inspired by PlayStation's rich history, fans have been puzzled by the conspicuous absence of certain iconic characters who played a pivotal role in PlayStation's early success.

Astro Bot, which launched on September 6, has received critical acclaim for its smooth gameplay and undeniable charm. Reviewers have praised its engaging mechanics, but the game's biggest draw is arguably the wide array of PlayStation-inspired cameos that the protagonist must rescue throughout the levels. In total, the game includes 173 VIP bots, with plans to expand this roster over time.

An upcoming Astro Bot DLC, set for release this fall, will introduce new levels and additional cameos. However, even with this update, the game noticeably lacks representation from certain franchises closely tied to PlayStation's history. One of the most glaring omissions is Final Fantasy VII's Cloud Strife. In a recent interview with Game File, Doucet revealed that Team Asobi initially had plans for a Cloud Strife cameo, but these were "shot down for reasons that are difficult to comment on."

Doucet added that Team Asobi respects "the choice of each publisher," strongly suggesting that Square Enix itself declined the inclusion of Cloud Strife. This decision is particularly surprising, given that Final Fantasy VII was instrumental in the PlayStation 1's success, becoming the second best-selling game on the platform. Additionally, Astro's Playroom previously featured a nod to Final Fantasy VII with Cloud's Buster Sword, making Square Enix's decision to skip Astro Bot even more puzzling.

This absence isn’t limited to Cloud Strife or Final Fantasy VII, as there is no representation of any Square Enix properties in Astro Bot. Popular franchises like Dragon Quest, Chrono, Life Is Strange, Kingdom Hearts, and Star Ocean are entirely missing, leaving many fans disappointed. While Square Enix’s reasons for opting out remain unknown, there’s hope that Astro Bot's impressive sales performance might prompt the company to reconsider its stance in the future.
