French Ubisoft Employees Called to Strike Over New Return-to-Office Policy

All Ubisoft employees in France have been urged to participate in a multi-day strike following the company's recent announcement of a new return-to-office policy. Ubisoft has around 1,000 workers at its Paris office, which it claims is the largest video game studio in France.

In September, VentureBeat reported that Ubisoft informed employees of planned company-wide changes to work arrangements. Ubisoft, best known for its Assassin's Creed franchise, announced in an email signed by Chief Studios and Portfolio Officer Marie-Sophie de Waubert that it intended to implement a hybrid model requiring employees to work in the office at least three days a week. A French union has since criticized this policy, arguing that it could be detrimental to the workforce.

Le Syndicat des Travailleurs et Travailleuses du Jeu Vidéo (STJV), a union representing French video game industry workers, called on all Ubisoft employees in France to express their dissatisfaction with the hybrid setup by participating in a strike from October 15 to October 17. This comes after Ubisoft's Montreal office experienced similar unrest last year following the implementation of a return-to-office mandate, despite assurances that fully remote work would remain an option. According to the STJV, many employees have been working effectively in the remote model for years and are now struggling to adapt to the proposed changes.

The STJV warned that the global rollout of Ubisoft's hybrid work model could lead to job losses, project disruptions, and increased psychosocial risks for those remaining with the company. In her email, de Waubert acknowledged that the changes would likely impact employees' routines and lifestyles, but noted that workers would have time to adjust. The announcement coincided with a drop in Ubisoft's share price in early September.

The STJV has put forward three key demands: a formal agreement between management and unions on remote work, an immediate salary increase to offset the decline in living standards, and the establishment of social dialogue to amplify employees' voices. The strike announcement followed a breakdown in profit-sharing negotiations between Ubisoft and its workforce.

In addition, Ubisoft announced after a September 25 conference call with investors that it would conduct an internal review to improve its operations. The company also mentioned the softer-than-expected launch of Star Wars Outlaws and the delay of Assassin's Creed Shadows to February 14, 2025.
