After a flurry of patches, World of Warcraft: The War Within's Delves are finally more stable than they were just a week ago. Enemies no longer mysteriously become easier to defeat in groups compared to solo play, and those run-ending attacks have been dialed back. Currently, Delves offer the challenging solo alternative to normal dungeons that Blizzard promised, but some lingering issues remain.

Following some confusion last week, Blizzard stepped in and adjusted several elements in Delves to ensure they were more challenging for group players than solo players. In fact, they might have overcorrected, as group players now face enemies with millions more health and more frequent deadly attacks compared to solo runs.

Then there’s Brann Bronzebeard, your NPC ally in solo Delves. He remains as talkative as ever but doesn’t contribute much. He’s ineffective as a healer, lacks damage output, and gives questionable advice, like telling you to avoid poison pools while standing in them himself. He’s become such a nuisance that someone even created an addon just to mute him.

Many players were relieved to see this solution, but others, like Reddit user Ragnarolls, actually enjoy his annoying presence: "I appreciate ol' uncle Brann being annoying. Getting into imaginary arguments and rolling my eyes every few seconds really makes the game experience more immersive."

The core issue with Delves is that they don’t quite align with the vision Blizzard initially pitched. They were meant to be a class-agnostic answer to WoW's dungeons and raids, where tank, healer, and damage dealer roles define the experience. However, in Delves, healers and fragile damage classes face a tough time, while tank players easily power through with their defensive abilities.

Delves are also genuinely challenging compared to WoW's typically easier solo activities. It's refreshing to see Blizzard challenge 20 years of player expectations, but some players are struggling to accept that certain classes or gear levels might not be up to the task. Entire Reddit threads debate which classes are best suited for Delves, with those using weaker classes resorting to changing their specialization mid-run just to survive. As Reddit user designerlemons put it, "It isn't fun, but it can be done." Not exactly a ringing endorsement!

As someone who's been following Diablo 4's resurgence over the past year, this situation with Delves feels quite familiar. With Blizzard introducing new endgame dungeon types that require different skills, the idea of a 'best build' in Diablo 4 has become more nuanced, forcing players to specialize. For example, a Lightning Spear sorceress excels in the Infernal Hordes mode but struggles against bosses in other modes like the Pit. Fortunately, Diablo 4 makes it relatively easy to level up secondary characters in a few hours. In contrast, WoW leveling is a much more time-consuming process.
