Beloved Characters May Return in Dragon Age: the Veilguard, Teases BioWare

In a recent interview, it was hinted that some fan-favorite characters from earlier Dragon Age games might be making a comeback in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. The world of Thedas is vast, and the Dragon Age series has consistently introduced players to different regions of the continent. While the first three games were set in Southern Thedas, Dragon Age: The Veilguard will transport players to the far north, exploring the Tevinter Imperium and beyond.

Despite the new setting, players can look forward to seeing familiar faces in the upcoming title. Notably, Scout Lace Harding will return as one of the companions in The Veilguard, while a more seasoned Varric Tethras takes on a mentor role for the protagonist, Rook. Solas, whose actions seem to be tied to the catastrophic events of The Veilguard, will also reappear, though whether he is an ally or enemy remains uncertain. However, recent comments suggest that even more beloved characters could return in the latest BioWare installment.

John Epler, the creative director of the game, and Ashley Barlow, the creative performance director, discussed the possibility of returning characters in an interview with TheGamer. "Obviously, there's Scout Harding who's back, but other characters [are also] coming back," Epler shared. "I'm excited for people to see them, especially in the context of having ten years pass since the last Dragon Age, both in the real world and in Thedas."

Although the return of the Inquisitor has already been confirmed, Barlow hinted that fans should expect more surprises. "There are so many new characters. We have some sneaky surprises of returning, loved characters, but that's the big thing: we have seven hundred unique characters to talk to." With The Veilguard featuring over 140,000 lines of dialogue, it is set to be the most dialogue-rich Dragon Age game to date, even surpassing Baldur's Gate 3 in terms of sheer volume.

The ambitious scope of the game's narrative, with 700 unique characters, is impressive, but it also raises expectations among fans. Many are speculating that Dorian Pavus, the beloved companion from Dragon Age: Inquisition and a noble of Tevinter, might play a significant role in the sequel, especially given the setting and potential influence Rook may have over the fate of the Tevinter Imperium.
