Amazon's Yakuza TV Series May Miss Some of the Franchise's Signature Quirkiness

The upcoming Yakuza TV series, set to debut on Amazon Prime Video this year, might not capture all the storytelling elements that fans of the game series have come to love. The Yakuza franchise is renowned for its intense crime drama narratives, contrasted by outrageous and comedic side quests known as substories. These substories often involve bizarre scenarios like battling men in diapers, falling for ridiculous scams, or participating in over-the-top toy car races.

Amazon recently released the first trailer for their live-action adaptation of Yakuza, which includes glimpses of Kamurocho, the fictional Tokyo district featured in the games, as well as key characters. The series stars Ryoma Takeuchi as Kazuma Kiryu, the main protagonist of the majority of the Yakuza/Like a Dragon games. The teaser features scenes of Kiryu's iconic dragon tattoo being applied to his back, along with brief snippets of the show's action.

In an interview with TheGamer, Ryoma Takeuchi was asked whether the show would include some of the wild activities found in the game's substories. “We don’t have that much in this iteration,” Takeuchi explained, “I think we're digging into the human emotions and the emotional elements of the characters in this iteration.”

Erik Barmack, the executive producer of the series, expanded on this, saying, "It's a balance that has to be found between the quirky world and characters that need to feel real to the audience." He acknowledged that while the Yakuza series is filled with quirky moments—like the infamous baby substory from Yakuza Kiwami 2—such scenes might clash with the serious tone of the main narrative. Although these quirky elements won't be heavily featured in the show, Barmack emphasized their importance to the franchise, noting that they were a key reason the series was considered for adaptation.

Yakuza, also known as Like a Dragon, is a beloved franchise with a large fan base. However, with over eight main titles in the series, diving into the games can be daunting for newcomers.
