Hideki Kamiya Expresses Strong Interest in Developing Sequels for Viewtiful Joe and Okami

Beloved game developer Hideki Kamiya has revealed his keen interest in leading the development of potential sequels to Viewtiful Joe and Okami. With a career spanning three decades, Kamiya has become a prominent figure in the gaming industry, contributing to numerous iconic and memorable games. He spent over a decade at Capcom in the late 1990s and early 2000s, before co-founding Platinum Games, the developer behind Bayonetta, in 2006. Now, Kamiya hopes to revisit two of his cult classics.

During his tenure at Capcom and Clover Studio, Kamiya played a pivotal role in creating two beloved series of the 2000s. Viewtiful Joe, a side-scrolling beat-'em-up inspired by superheroes and Japanese "tokusatsu" shows, gained a cult following with its original game and its sequel, Viewtiful Joe 2. Okami, an action-adventure game rooted in Japanese folklore, earned numerous accolades and was later ported to the Wii and remastered in HD for modern consoles. Kamiya is now actively expressing his interest in developing new entries directly to Capcom.

According to NintendoLife, Kamiya shared his enthusiasm for new Viewtiful Joe and Okami games in a recent interview with "UNSEEN." He revealed that he had requested a new Viewtiful Joe game in a recent Capcom survey, explicitly stating his desire to direct it. Kamiya also discussed the future of Okami, expressing his wish to complete the franchise's unfinished story. He noted that Viewtiful Joe's limited popularity might have led Capcom to dismiss the idea of a third installment.

This isn't the first time Kamiya has expressed his desire to create new games for these franchises. Earlier this year, he discussed his interest in remaking the original Viewtiful Joe using Capcom's RE engine on his YouTube channel. He has also previously talked about wanting to develop a new Okami, believing that mechanics like the Celestial Brush could be expanded in a new game.
