FromSoftware's decision to leave the sorcery untouched has puzzled many. Some speculate that this is because Swift Slash and Rolling Sparks had a substantial impact on PvP, whereas Impenetrable Thorns does not, unless players use a specific build.

To effectively use Impenetrable Thorns in PvP, players need a high Faith level, extremely high Arcane, and decent Intelligence stats. The sorcery's effectiveness comes from its three thorn attacks hitting the enemy at close range, scaling with Faith and Intelligence. The crucial element, however, is the sorcery's insane bleed buildup, which requires high Arcane stats. Players noted that with an Arcane level as high as 80, the sorcery can instantly cause the bleed status effect, taking away a significant chunk of health.
