Aquaplus Celebrates 30th Anniversary with Limited-Edition Anime-Themed Itasha Cars

Anime and gaming fans love to showcase their favorite series, whether through pins, t-shirts, or even tattoos. But for those wanting to make a bolder statement, there’s a trend in Japan of decorating entire cars with anime and gaming themes, a style known as "itasha." These vehicles often feature custom designs inspired by beloved characters, creating a subculture in the otaku world.

Typically, itasha are custom-made by fans or ordered through specialty shops. Now, however, in celebration of its 30th anniversary, Japanese video game developer Aquaplus is offering a unique opportunity: a limited number of pre-designed itasha cars will be made available for purchase. This makes them more accessible to fans who might otherwise have difficulty obtaining one.

Aquaplus, known for visual novels in a competitive market, has teamed up with three of Japan’s top automakers to create three exclusive itasha models: a Toyota GR Yaris, Suzuki Swift Sport, and the option of a Toyota 86 or Subaru BRZ, both sharing the same design. Each vehicle features artwork from Aquaplus' iconic series like To Heart, Utawarerumono, Tears to Tiara, and White Album. The designs cover the entire car, including the sides, roof, and rear window, and incorporate special artwork created just for the anniversary, featuring multiple Aquaplus characters with a vibrant punk-hued base.

These limited-edition itasha cars are extremely desirable due to their rarity, with only one of each model available. The only way to buy one is through a lottery; winners earn the right to purchase a car but will still need to cover the cost. The Suzuki Swift Sport is priced at approximately 3 million yen (USD $20,000), while the Toyota Yaris and 86/BRZ models start at 4.5 million yen (USD $29,000). Winners will also be able to select some customizable options, such as transmission type.

The designs were created by Jio Create, an auto wrapping company based in Saitama, which is also handling the lottery. Fans can enter between November 1 and 30 on Jio Create's website for their chance to own one of these rare vehicles.
