Classic God of War Games May Join PlayStation Plus Premium Catalog

A recent discovery hints that the Greek-era God of War games might be added to the PlayStation Plus Premium classics catalog in an emulated format. Currently, most of the older titles in Sony's acclaimed God of War series can only be accessed via cloud streaming on PS Plus Premium. However, with the franchise's 20th anniversary approaching next year, this situation could soon change.

The God of War series launched in 2005 with the original PS2 game, quickly achieving remarkable success by selling over 4.6 million copies by 2012. The sequel, God of War II, followed in 2007 and garnered similar critical and commercial acclaim. The franchise then flourished with several new entries on the PSP and PS3, including God of War III, Chains of Olympus, Ghost of Sparta, and Ascension. Apart from the remastered version of God of War III, none of these games are natively playable on the PS5, which has disappointed many fans.

An image of Kratos from the Greek-era games was spotted as key art in the PS2 classics section of PS Plus Premium, even though these titles are currently missing from the catalog. This could indicate that Sony is planning to add the classic God of War games natively in time for the series' 20th anniversary in 2025. Additionally, there have been rumors of remasters for these games, which may have been confused with the potential for PS Plus Premium emulation.

Sony has been actively working to bring PS2 titles to the PS4 and PS5, especially after introducing a new PS2 emulator for the classics catalog earlier this year. Thus, it seems plausible that Sony would want to release the classic God of War games from cloud streaming and make them natively playable on current hardware. Given that God of War is one of the company's most critically acclaimed franchises, fans would undoubtedly appreciate the chance to play the older titles on the PS4 and PS5.

Similar to the recent re-release of Siren on PS Plus Premium, players can expect features such as trophies, rewind, save states, video filters, and up-rendering if the classic God of War games are added to the service. However, God of War: Ascension stands out as a potential exception, as it is currently only available on the PS3. Since the PS5 does not support native PS3 emulation at this time, it is likely that God of War: Ascension will remain a cloud-streamed title, even if the other God of War games make the transition.
