New Exploration and Companion Features Revealed in BioWare's Latest Dragon Age: the Veilguard QA

BioWare recently held its second Discord Q&A for Dragon Age: The Veilguard, answering community questions on topics like whether Dwarves will have dedicated beards, how combat mechanics will function, and if lockpicking will be included in the game. Game director Corinne Busche, speaking with a minor spoiler warning, addressed the lockpicking question and introduced a new exploration mechanic featured in the upcoming release.

In Dragon Age: Inquisition, exploration abilities were tied to a companion's class—Warriors could break down walls, Rogues could pick locks, and Mages could use Veilfire. In The Veilguard, however, these abilities are tied to individual companions, with each having a unique exploration skill. While specific details about these abilities remain under wraps, this change effectively increases the number of exploration skills from three to seven.

Interestingly, players won’t need to have these companions in their party to use their abilities. According to Busche, the main character, Rook, can access these skills through a special dagger obtained from Solas. For instance, even if Lucanis is not in the party, players will still be able to use his exploration ability when needed. This eliminates the need to backtrack to certain areas with the appropriate companion later on.

While it's still unclear how this feature will fully manifest in gameplay, it has sparked excitement among fans. Though Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s main missions are said to be more direct and linear, the game will offer plenty of areas for exploration, including side quests in locations like Arlathan Forest. Whether on main missions or side quests, players won’t be restricted by not having certain companions with them.

Another exciting addition to the game is that companions will no longer be limited to joining the party through cutscenes or quests. Players may encounter companions like Neve while exploring the world and choose to assist them on personal missions. With the emphasis on character interactions, romances, and relationships with Rook and fellow companions, it's clear why BioWare decided to rename the game from Dragon Age: Dreadwolf to The Veilguard.
